The Danube Delta is one of the most spectacular vacation destinations in Romania, offering a fairytale-like landscape regardless of the season. This unique area attracts tourists from all over the world due to its impressive biodiversity, stunning natural scenery, and the hospitality of the locals.
The fishing villages of the Delta are true treasures of tradition, where houses painted in white and blue, with reed-thatched roofs, preserve the charm of times gone by. Each settlement has its own story, and the elders of the area are always ready to share legends and memories.
One of the most representative villages is Mila 23, located in the heart of the Delta, in the commune of Crișan, Tulcea County. Accessible only by water, this picturesque village is home to approximately 500 residents, mostly of Lipovan origin, as well as Romanians and Ukrainians.
The village’s name comes from the nautical mile marking the distance to the old Sulina branch. Mila 23 is a paradise for fishermen, where locals know the best spots for abundant catches. Here, every household has a boat ready for exploring the Delta’s channels.
The local cuisine is a delight for any visitor. Traditional dishes such as fish borscht, fish stew, fried fish with polenta and garlic sauce are prepared following authentic recipes passed down from generation to generation.
